Who We Are
We are a small group of students and teachers from a small Detroit Public Schools Community District high school in Detroit, MI. Throughout our years at this school, due to a lack of resources and teachers, we have had very few opportunities for creative and engaging curriculum in our classrooms. We heard about other schools having interesting classes that helped students become exposed to new ways of thinking, learning, and new content to which we could make real-life connections.
As a result, this school year, our Social Studies and History teacher, Mr. Boland, asked and encouraged us to work toward building a new course that would interest us and inspire us to become more deeply engaged in the World History curriculum at our school. Collectively, we worked together in order to re-design the curriculum, create objectives and goals for ourselves as students based upon Michigan High School Content Expectations for the World History course, and are currently in the process of working together as adults and students to design the content we learn and the assessments we will be graded by.
In this website you will find the research that is behind this co-created curriculum, the process we went through in order to create this curriculum, and the goals and results we are hoping to accomplish over the coming year. This process has not been easy and we have put many hours into the work we have completed, however, our goal is to understand that we as students and teachers should always be to have an intimate relationship with the work we do in the classroom and express our voice in order to advocate for ourselves, our aspirations, and the type of learning in which we wish to engage in the classroom.
